Paralucent Slab is an addition to the ever-popular Paralucent family. Paralucent is versatile all-purpose modern sans and slab serif design. Available in seven weights, from Thin to Heavy, with corresponding italics, it avoids some of the more eccentric calligraphic quirks of Akzidenz or Helvetica or the cool precision of Univers for an elegant, functional, yet warm design. Several core ideas inform Paralucent’s design. Prime attention has given to the negative space between characters, giving a more even “colour”, especially in text. For example, the J, L and T have shorter arms than comparable sans typefaces, while the M and W are wider. The A has a lower bar, opening up the interior counter. An unusually high lower-case x-height again helps to give a more even colour and improve legibility. Care has been taken to rationalise repeated elements like the tails on lower-case letters, or the Q and the “ear” of the g. Typographic design solutions that are consistent across all these features add more stylistic cohesion. ‘Ink traps’ are exaggerated incisions used to open up a letter's narrower internal angles, which can become clogged with ink, especially in small point sizes. Now largely redundant due to the high quality of modern print, they are still sometimes used as a stylistic quirk or design feature. Now that digital fonts are often reversed or outlined, or enlarged to enormous sizes, these can also lead to unexpected or obtrusive results. Paralucent takes these inevitable digital manipulations into account, and adds optical corrections without resort to ink traps. The family has been picked up by many UK and US publishers, featuring heavily in magazines like Loaded, Heat and TV Quick, as well as high-end coffee-table photography books and gallery websites. This family, in normal and bold weights, is based on Advertisers Gothic, designed by Robert Wiebking for Barnhart Brothers & Spindler in 1917. The original might be considered a transitional design between Art Nouveau and Art Deco; this version accentuates the Deco traits, adding a thick-and-thin treatment not found in the original. The large x-height and short descenders allow for compact, commanding headlines with a carefree charm, a.k.a. bell'agio. Both versions of the font include 1252 Latin, 1250 CE (with localization for Romanian and Moldovan).

One of the more elegant script fonts available, this design is based on calligraphic handwriting called "Copperplate" because of the copper plates that it was etched into for reproduction. I love going to flea markets and second-hand stores; in fact a lot of the furniture in our home is second hand (or pre-loved, a euphemism I find rather peculiar). I personally believe that buying used products is a good way to help this planet, as no new stuff needs to be made and the old stuff gets a second life. Fleabitten is a ‘western style’ serif font. You could use it to pimp the posters for your line dance festival, but hey, be creative! I am sure you’ll find some good use for this very nice pre-loved font. Yes, pre-loved: I loved it first!

Bakery Script is the Argentine duo's nod to the high spirits of the 1970s. Angel Koziupa used his ever popular wild brush to draw the outline version, and Alejandro Paul refined it, expanded it, then extrapolated the solid version. While the outline version makes the letters seem like they're growing out of each other's shadows, the solid version presents a wilder version of the casual dancing letters Koziupa's brush has entertained us with during recent years. Sharp in places, perfectly curved in others, and with many letter alternates and ligatures included within the fonts, Bakery Script would be at home in packaging design, outdoors and adventure literature, and everywhere a display design needs that sharp but friendly touch to reach its goal.

Jugo Script is a Koziupa/Paul near-parody of the soft and speedy late-1980s, early-1990s display scripts. Though it essentially is one of the usual exhibits of Koziupa's calligraphic skill, its individual shapes and overall construct show a mischievous wink at Oz Cooper and the hundreds of lens-blurred film types he inspired in the 1970s and 80s. Koziupa's unique sense of letterform and proportion is on full display in the uppercase and the figures, while the lowercase is an eccentric exercise in single stroke lettering, complete with quick and subtle wrist bends, minimal pausing, and hurried exits. Jugo Script's softness and internal call-and-answer structure make it a natural for comfort food packaging, especially the sweet stuff.

Goudy Modern/Open was designed by Frederic Goudy, who was inspired by the caption of a French engraving. It is Goudy's first attempt at a "modern" face, but with less contrast and rigidity normally found in Bodoni style Modern faces. Goudy Modern was designed later in 1918 after viewing a proof of Goudy Open with the line filled in. Not a true modern face, but still a Goudy classic. The Pro versions include ligatures, varieties of numerals and Central European character sets.
